Anne Royer, Artist
Chartres Cathedral, 2011
2011
An earlier version of Chartres Cathedral caught the eye of my good friend Joanna Weber, who spent a great deal of time in France. She liked that painting because it captured the dripping dampness of the Cathedral in Chartres, France. She said that it was often a grey day in Chartres.

Last year, Joanna suddenly died. She was a wonderful art historian, curator, writer and lecturer, and painter. Her advise and encouragement often comes to mind. In remembrance of her, I again paint the cathedral we both loved, and at the bottom of the painting reads, "Elle lui donnait la sensation d'un jour gris et pluvieux." This translates, "It gives her the sensation of a grey and raining day."
